About this exercise

The barbell Jefferson squat is a unique straddle-stance compound exercise where the lifter straddles the barbell with one foot in front and one behind, gripping the bar on each side with alternating hand positions. It combines elements of a squat and deadlift, loading the quadriceps, glutes, and posterior chain while demanding significant hip mobility and balance.

How to Perform

  • Place the barbell on the floor and stand straddling it, one foot in front of the bar and one foot behind
  • Hinge down and grip the bar with one hand in front of your front leg and the other hand behind your rear leg
  • Brace your core and keep your chest up as you drive through both feet to stand upright
  • Keep the bar centered under your hips and your spine neutral throughout the lift
  • Stand fully erect, squeezing the glutes at the top
  • Slowly lower the bar back to the floor by bending at the hips and knees, maintaining control
  • Alternate the leading foot on subsequent sets for balanced development
