Barbell Hyperextension

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Hyperextension.

MediumLower back

About this exercise

A weighted back extension exercise performed on a hyperextension bench while holding a barbell across the chest or upper back. The added barbell load increases the demand on the erector spinae, glutes, and hamstrings compared to bodyweight hyperextensions, making it an effective exercise for building lower back strength.

How to Perform

  • Position yourself on a hyperextension bench with your hips resting at the edge of the pad and ankles secured under the footpads
  • Hold a barbell across your upper chest with both hands gripping it firmly
  • Begin with your body lowered, torso hanging toward the floor at roughly a 45–90 degree angle
  • Engage your lower back and glutes and raise your torso until it is in line with or slightly above parallel to the floor
  • Hold briefly at the top, squeezing the glutes and lower back
  • Slowly lower your torso back to the starting position with control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions

About the Barbell Hyperextension

The Barbell Hyperextension is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
