About this exercise

The barbell hang clean is a dynamic Olympic weightlifting movement where the bar is held at or just above knee height before being explosively pulled and received in a front rack position. It develops explosive leg and hip power, pulling mechanics, and the timing required for Olympic lifts. The hang start removes the initial pull from the floor, allowing athletes to focus on hip drive and the catch.

How to Perform

  • Stand holding the barbell at hip level with a shoulder-width overhand grip
  • Hinge at the hips and bend your knees to lower the bar to just above knee height — this is the hang position
  • Set a flat back, chest up, and shoulders slightly over the bar
  • Take a breath and brace your core before initiating the pull
  • Drive through your legs explosively while shrugging your shoulders and pulling the bar upward, keeping it close to your body
  • As the bar rises to upper-chest height, pull your elbows forward and under the bar quickly
  • Catch the bar in the front rack position with elbows high and parallel to the floor
  • Stand to full extension
  • Lower the bar under control back to the hang position to begin the next repetition
