About this exercise

The barbell full squat is a back squat performed through a complete range of motion, descending until the hamstrings make contact with the calves (below parallel). The full depth recruits the glutes and quadriceps through their entire range and places significant demand on ankle and hip mobility.

How to Perform

  • Position the barbell on your upper traps in a squat rack and step back into your squat stance, feet shoulder-width apart and toes turned out slightly
  • Brace your core, take a deep breath, and begin the descent by pushing your knees out over your toes
  • Continue squatting all the way down until your hamstrings touch your calves, maintaining a neutral spine throughout
  • Keep your chest up, heels flat on the floor, and knees tracking over your toes at the bottom
  • Drive through your entire foot and push your knees out to begin the ascent
  • Stand fully upright, squeezing the glutes at the top before beginning the next rep
