Barbell Drag Curl

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Drag Curl.

MediumBiceps

About this exercise

The barbell drag curl is a biceps isolation exercise where the bar is literally dragged up the torso rather than swung forward, eliminating momentum and keeping tension on the biceps throughout the range of motion. The elbows travel backward as the bar rises, maximally shortening the biceps at the top.

How to Perform

  • Stand holding a barbell with an underhand (supinated) grip, hands shoulder-width apart
  • Keep the bar in contact with your body and begin curling it upward by pulling your elbows back behind your torso
  • Drag the bar along your abdomen and chest as you curl, keeping it close to your body the entire way
  • Continue until the bar reaches upper-chest level and your elbows are fully behind your body
  • Squeeze the biceps hard at the top
  • Slowly lower the bar back down the same path, maintaining contact with your body throughout
