About this exercise

A trapezius isolation exercise performed lying face-down on a decline bench, holding a barbell and shrugging the shoulders upward. The decline angle changes the line of pull compared to a standing shrug, placing greater emphasis on the middle and lower trapezius fibers.

How to Perform

  • Set a bench to a moderate decline angle and lie face-down with your chest on the pad, legs secured
  • Grip a barbell with an overhand grip, arms hanging straight down toward the floor
  • Keep your arms straight throughout and shrug your shoulders directly upward toward your ears
  • Squeeze the trapezius at the top of the movement for a brief pause
  • Lower the barbell back to the starting position in a controlled manner
  • Repeat for the target number of repetitions
