About this exercise

A lower-body exercise where you step one foot behind and across the other in a curtsey motion while holding a barbell across your upper back. This cross-behind pattern strongly activates the glutes, particularly the gluteus medius, along with the quadriceps.

How to Perform

  • Position a barbell across your upper traps as you would for a back squat
  • Stand tall with feet hip-width apart and brace your core
  • Step one foot diagonally behind and across the other leg, lowering your back knee toward the floor
  • Keep your front foot flat and your torso upright throughout the descent
  • Push through the front heel to return to standing
  • Alternate legs for each rep or complete all reps on one side before switching
