About this exercise

The barbell Cossack squat is an advanced unilateral lower-body exercise that combines a deep lateral squat with a loaded barbell across the upper back. It builds single-leg strength, hip mobility, and inner-thigh flexibility simultaneously, making it one of the most demanding compound movements for the lower body.

How to Perform

  • Position a barbell across your upper traps and stand with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart
  • Shift your weight to one side and begin squatting down on that leg while keeping the opposite leg straight and foot flat or turned up
  • Descend until the working thigh is parallel to the floor or as deep as hip mobility allows
  • Keep your torso as upright as possible and the heel of the working foot firmly on the ground
  • Drive through the heel to press back up to the starting position
  • Alternate sides for each repetition or complete all reps on one side before switching
