Barbell Clean Deadlift

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Barbell Clean Deadlift.

HardGlutesQuadriceps

About this exercise

A deadlift variation performed with a clean grip (shoulder-width, hook grip) and bar path mechanics that mimic the first pull of a clean. Compared to a conventional deadlift, the starting position is more upright and the bar stays closer to the body, making it an essential accessory for developing the clean's pull mechanics and leg drive off the floor.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and the barbell over mid-foot
  • Grip the bar shoulder-width apart using a clean (hook) grip
  • Drop your hips so your thighs are near parallel and your shoulders are slightly in front of the bar
  • Brace your core, take a deep breath, and create full-body tension
  • Push the floor away and drive your legs while keeping the bar close to your shins
  • As the bar passes the knees, keep the back angle consistent and continue to extend the hips
  • Reach a full lockout with hips extended and shoulders back
  • Lower the bar under control back to the floor
