About this exercise

A cardiovascular and conditioning drill where you run backwards at a controlled pace, activating the posterior chain and challenging balance, coordination, and spatial awareness. It is commonly used in athletic warm-ups and agility training to develop reactive foot speed and hip flexor mobility.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart and your gaze directed forward (in the direction you came from)
  • Begin to drive your knees up and push off the balls of your feet in a backward direction
  • Lean your torso very slightly forward to maintain balance as you move backwards
  • Pump your arms in the opposite pattern to your legs for rhythm and stability
  • Keep your steps light and quick, landing on the balls of your feet rather than your heels
  • Maintain an upright spine and avoid bending at the waist
  • Continue for the prescribed distance or time, staying aware of the space behind you

About the Retro Run

The Retro Run is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
