About this exercise

The axle deadlift is a deadlift variation performed with a thick-diameter axle bar rather than a standard barbell. The larger circumference dramatically increases grip demand, strengthening the forearms and hands while the movement itself targets the posterior chain — hamstrings, glutes, and lower back — just like a conventional deadlift.

How to Perform

  • Position the axle bar over mid-foot and stand with feet hip-width apart
  • Hinge at the hips and bend the knees to grip the bar with a double-overhand grip, hands just outside the legs
  • Take a deep breath, brace your core firmly, and pull your shoulder blades down and back
  • Push the floor away with your feet while simultaneously driving your hips forward to lift the bar
  • Keep the bar close to your body throughout the ascent, maintaining a neutral spine
  • Lock out at the top by fully extending the hips and knees and squeezing the glutes
  • Lower the bar under control by hinging the hips back and bending the knees simultaneously
