Assisted Pull-Up

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Assisted Pull-Up.

EasyMiddle back

About this exercise

The assisted pull-up uses a counterweighted machine to offset a portion of your body weight, allowing you to build the lat and upper-back strength required for unassisted pull-ups. It is ideal for beginners or for higher-rep training where fatigue would otherwise limit performance.

How to Perform

  • Set the counterweight on the assisted pull-up machine to reduce the effective load to a manageable level
  • Kneel or stand on the platform pad
  • Grip the pull-up bar with an overhand grip at approximately shoulder width
  • Hang with arms fully extended and shoulders engaged
  • Pull your body upward until your chin clears the bar
  • Pause briefly at the top, then slowly lower yourself back to full arm extension
  • Maintain controlled movement throughout — avoid swinging or kipping

About the Assisted Pull-Up

The Assisted Pull-Up is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
