Assisted Hyperextension

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Assisted Hyperextension.

EasyLower back

About this exercise

The assisted hyperextension is a beginner-friendly back extension performed on a hyperextension bench, where a partner or band provides assistance on the way up to reduce the load on the lower back. It is an excellent introduction to the movement pattern before progressing to unassisted or weighted hyperextensions.

How to Perform

  • Adjust the hyperextension bench so the pad sits just below your hip bones
  • Lock your ankles under the ankle pads and cross your arms over your chest
  • Hinge forward from the hips, lowering your torso toward the floor under control
  • Use the assistance (partner or band) to help raise your torso back to the starting position
  • Extend until your body forms a straight line — do not hyperextend the lumbar spine
  • Keep your core lightly braced and your neck neutral throughout
  • Lower again in a controlled manner and repeat

About the Assisted Hyperextension

The Assisted Hyperextension is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
