About this exercise

A low-impact bodyweight exercise that involves stepping one foot out to the side, shifting weight onto it, then returning to center before repeating on the other side. It activates the glutes, outer thighs, and inner thighs through lateral movement.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet together and hands on your hips or in front of your chest
  • Step your right foot out to the side, shifting your weight onto it
  • Bring your right foot back to center
  • Step your left foot out to the side, shifting your weight onto it
  • Bring your left foot back to center
  • Continue alternating sides in a controlled, rhythmic manner
  • Keep your core braced and your torso upright throughout

The Alternating Step Out is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
